Pledge to Boycott Unsustainably-Caught Swordfish

I'm helping to protect ocean wildlife by pledging to boycott unsustainably-caught swordfish.

I'm going to be part of the solution to the problem of longlines and drift gillnets decimating ocean animals like sharks, whales and sea turtles.

I am going to use my purchasing power as a consumer to try to get restaurants and groceries to stop selling unsustainably-caught swordfish.


I pledge to boycott unsustainably-caught swordfish.

Swordfish are amazing animals that use their great speed and agility in the water to catch their prey, but they’re no match for industrial fishing. Swordfish is caught with industrial fishing methods that decimate ocean wildlife in order to be sold as a luxury food. I want to help stop the slaughter.

Fisheries use billions of hooks and thousands of miles of nets in the ocean to catch swordfish, but they also catch sea turtles, whales, dolphins and other marine wildlife every day. In many cases, these fisheries kill and waste more ocean life than is consumed. Some of these wasted animals are endangered species, such as sperm whales and leatherback sea turtles.

As a consumer, I pledge not to eat unsustainably-caught swordfish. I want restaurants and groceries to stop selling unsustainably-caught swordfish that is killing ocean wildlife. I'm asking restaurants and groceries to either:

  1. stop all sales of swordfish, or
  2. sell only swordfish caught by fishing methods that do not threaten our ocean ecosystems and wildlife.

Most swordfish that is sold was caught using longlines or drift gillnets. These fishing methods are decimating ocean wildlife, and less destructive fishing methods are available. More responsible fishermen, who want to safeguard the ocean and its resources, are using deep-set buoy gear or harpoons to catch swordfish. If restaurants and groceries want to sell swordfish, they should make sure they are not selling swordfish that was caught using longlines or drift gillnets.
